Background of the Study
Internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Nigeria, particularly in conflict-affected regions like Borno State, face severe challenges related to access to basic needs, security, and social integration (Sani & Usman, 2023). Media representation plays a crucial role in shaping public perceptions of IDPs, influencing the level of sympathy, support, and government response. Television, radio, and print media often portray IDPs in ways that either highlight their suffering or focus on the relief efforts directed towards them. However, these representations can have profound implications on how IDPs are treated by both the public and the authorities. In Bama, where a large number of IDPs are concentrated due to the Boko Haram insurgency, the media’s portrayal can impact the effectiveness of humanitarian responses and influence local community attitudes towards displaced persons. This study aims to explore the role of media representation in shaping public understanding and the societal integration of IDPs in Bama, focusing on how media coverage affects their visibility and treatment.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While the media plays an essential role in shaping public attitudes towards IDPs, there is limited understanding of how media representation specifically influences the integration and wellbeing of IDPs in Bama. How does media representation affect the public perception of IDPs? Does media coverage influence the support and relief efforts directed towards them? This study seeks to investigate how media representations of IDPs in Bama shape their lives and their chances for social reintegration.
